September is a busy month in the garden. Summer may be winding down, but there is still plenty to do before autumn arrives in full force. It is the perfect time to tidy borders, collect seeds, plant spring-flowering bulbs and make the most of the last days of summer colour.

Whether you have a large garden, a small patio or a few containers, here are some of the most useful garden jobs to tackle in September.

One of the most satisfying September jobs is planting spring-flowering bulbs. Daffodils, crocuses, alliums and many other bulbs can be planted during autumn, giving them time to establish before winter. Planting now means you can look forward to a colourful display when spring arrives. For the best results, choose a sunny or partially shaded position with reasonably well-draining soil.

September is also the perfect time for planting hardy perennials and biennials such as foxgloves, wallflowers and sweet Williams.

Many summer flowers are still looking their best in September, so keep deadheading faded blooms. Removing spent flowers encourages plants to produce more flowers and helps keep borders looking tidy. Pay particular attention to roses, dahlias, cosmos and other plants that continue flowering well into autumn.

Clear away tired summer bedding and remove any dead or diseased foliage. However, don’t be too quick to cut everything back. You can collect seeds from your favourite plants and sow them next year to grow more of the plants you love in your garden. Alternatively, leave seed heads on over winter, providing food for birds and shelter for insects.

September is an excellent month for lawn care. Cooler temperatures and increased rainfall can help grass recover from summer wear. Give the lawn a good mow, remove excessive thatch if necessary and consider aerating compacted areas. It is also a good time to repair bare patches by sowing grass seed. Keep newly seeded areas watered until the grass has established.
